it's a little chilly...
...and i like it! It feels like fall when I wake up in the morning which is awesome as fall is the season that I miss the most. Actually fall is the season that I miss more the longer I am out here - winter, meh - spring, whatev - but the smell of fall in the air, watching the leaves change and fall, raking them up into giant piles and launching off of tree braches into the soft crunchiness...*sigh*

keeping up with the timmehs
Yeah for DVR's! On saturday, right in the middle of a RIVETING season of America's Next Top Model, our DVR just...stopped. After resetting it three times the cable worked but when I pressed the DVR List button it gave an error message - THE HORROR!!! Semi-seriously - being so used to having the DVR full of retarded tv to watch at the touch of a button , it pretty much sucked to be without it for a few days. Lucky for me the cable guy came and brought me a new box (hehehe) yesterday and all is well.

It's a mixed blessing - I have always been pretty much incapable of watching more than one new show at a time b/c I would always forget and miss a week and there didn't used to be a way to watch shows online easily. I guess there were VCR's but that's always been too much of a pain in the ass for me - now with my pal Mr. DVR I just tell it to record all episodes and within a few days I have hours of shows to watch whenever I damn well please :) But now I watch a lot more television than I used to.

The new Ken Burn WWII documentary just started on KPBS on Sunday and I think it's really good. It's like 14 or 17 hours long all together played in 2 - 2.5 hours segments. It's set up as the story of four American towns - Mobile, Alabama; Lauverne, MN; Sacramento, CA; Waterbury, CT. They have a pretty good mix of people telling their stories and they aren't just focusing on the European part of the war. I like WWII stuff.

that is all i have to say about that.

Whistlestop game night tonight, yo! :)

My Kitten came back!

About 1.5 months ago, the kitten moved into Matt's house. Matt has two cats of his own, Archie and Gar. Gar is a laid back stoner type cat that just likes to eat and play, Archie is an uptight priss that likes everything to be "mise en place" and is easily upset. In other words, Archies HATES the Kitten but after a month and a half things were pretty calm just a little hissing every now and again - plus the Kitten had her own room that she was in at night and when we were gone.

Last Saturday all the cats went outside to play - after a few hours Archie and Gar came back in to eat as normal but Kitten had taken refuge under the back deck and refuse to come out even when tempted with food and toys. I had been trying to get her in every half hour or so for about 3 hours when Matt came home and started helping me. We spent 1.5 hours chasing her out from under the deck and trying to grab her and toss her inside. As stupid as she is, the kitten is a wily one when she wants to get away. The plan of chasing her inside failed miserably, left both of us sweaty and grumpy and she ended up taking off into the canyon and we haven't seen any sign of her since.

Sunday I was retarded hungover but was still dragging my ass outside to look for her every hour or so. no sign. we left food outside which generally remained untouched all day but disappeared while we slept. Monday we searched the canyons - no sign. Yesterday we put up posters and talked to some of the regular dog walkers and serached the canyons again and there was still no sign of her.

Around 5am this morning I heard Archie hiss and give a little growl and woke up and saw him plastered againste the window looking into the backyard and then I heard this pathetic little meow. Ran to the window and called out to the kitten and she did her little meow back so I ran outside with food and grabbed her. As she HATES to be picked up she was having none of that but we managed to chase her in through the front door. Archie went ballistic and attacked her immediately but now she is safe and sound in her little room.

YEAH my Kitten came back!! She was starving and kept choking on her food trying to eat it too quickly and she is really stinky but other than that she seem no worse for the wear. WOOHOO! I really thought that I was never going to see her again...This is the picture I used of her for the poster - I thought it captured her typical "i have no idea what's going on and I am freaked out by it" look. Gotta beat Timmeh...
...and keep it up with the posting. Although I am kind of drawing a blank on something to talk about, which is pretty much why i don't post very much. But besides the "competition" with Tim I figure if I actually force myself to sit down and write stuff it will get easier right? RIGHT?!!?!??!

hmmm...now what to talk about? Well I am pretty shocked that it is fall again - I mean it even feels like it weather-wise in that San Diego kind of way. Anyways my point is that it seems like months and years are slipping by so quickly and the older I get the quicker it seems to go. So if it's like this now how bad will it be when I am SUPER old - like over 40?! ;)

What caused me to realize that it was fall already was the email I got about Fantasy Hockey starting soon - woohoo! This adds another goal in terms of increased activity - I vow to be a more active manager of my hockey team(s) this year and a more frequent contributor to the banter on the message boards. So those of you that are involved with the FHL can call me out if I fail at these two goals, m'kay?

That is all for now - I am going to curl up with my coffee and read me some Anthony Bourdain "Kitchen Confidential"

More soon...(really i mean it!)

This is weekend update...
...with your host erino!

Friday - We had our work picnic so my day started off with a mimosa and some donuts at Mission Bay with Kate, our lovely admin. Then I went up and actually worked for a little while and my boss, Yujin, followed me back to the park. A bunch of us played croquet and Mike and Heather's boss was hitting on me (blech!) and we all got a little tipsy. The beer ran out around 3:15 so we all harrassed the head of medchem to go buy us more beer. All in all the casual potluck style picnic was much more fun than last years more corporate, catered event. Later on in the evening Matt and I went to Tom and Karmen's and ate pizza. The boys talked about football and awful lot and Karmen and I snuck off and watched a chickflick (Miss Potter) and fell asleep.

Saturday was our "nine month-iversary" and we had planned on biking down to the Midway and going to the museum and having dinner downtown but that didn't happen. Matt did (much-needed) yard work and I went to Target. I got a few really cute and comfy new sweaters for cheap - their clothes have been getting better and better over the years. I <3 new clothes. When I returned from shoppin' with delicious Wahoo's food in hand, I discovered that there was yet another marathon of America's Next Top Model (ANTM) on MTV and it was NOT cycle 7 like the schedule said but CYCLE FOUR - which is one of the two I haven't watched yet. It is also the season where Tyra supposedly flips out and screams and one of the girls! So that's all dvr-ed and waiting for me to watch it - I am about 5 episodes in :) So after a 3 hour nap, we biked down to the Linkery (http://www.thelinkery.com/) and ate dinner. We split the Pork Belly duo starter (freakin delish - very salty thought, the small portions were a good idea there) and I had the roasted acorn squash and israeli couscous that I am obsessed with - who knew a vegan dish could be so wonderful?! Matt had some really yummy goat dish and we split a bottle of wine (some 2003 dry creek CA zinfandel). Afterwards we went down to the Ray at Night thing in North Park and strolled around for a bit - it was fun and mellow. After getting back we watched ANTM for a few hours and due to the coffee I had with dessert I was up until after 3am. boo.

On Sunday Matt's friend Tom had gotten us tickets to the Chargers/Bears game. We went over to Tom and Karmen's around 10am. Karmen and I went and bounced on the Spruce Street Suspension bridge (http://www.hillquest.com/history/spruce.html) with our coffees while we waited for our breakfast/lunch to be ready. Tom made spicy Italian sausages from Pete's Meats with fresh bread from Sarlunto's and roasted and marinated peppers and onions - it was all delicious and I am hungry again just thinking about it. Their landlord and his boyfriend and Matt's friend Robert and this Todd dude came by and ate as well and then we took the trolley to Qualcomm.

The game was fun - we had really nice club level seats (in the shade the whole time) which were unfortunately ass-far from the trolley. Football live is so different from Football on tv. The massive attention paid on television and all the analysis shows, etc just make it seem so SERIOUS on tv - but live it had a sense of fun that doesn't come through the tv. All the activity was also distracting so I didn't watch that much of the actual game. It's like the opposite of baseball for me - when i go to bbgames I watch most of the game while on tv i rarely pay attention. I think football is just easier to watch on TV but I am glad I got to go to this game and see the Bears play as well. After the game we hung around for awhile to let the trolley clear out a bit - we even walked to the nest stop by Ikea but it was still ridiculously packed. We met up with Robert and Todd again in Little Italy - they were wasted and had gotten kicked out of the game for throwing beer and instigating a fight. wonderful. They eventually left and Tom, Karmen, Matt and I went to dinner at the Mandarin House on 5th by the park. BEST. CHINESE. FOOD. EVAR. seriously - insanely good. There is no reason to go anywhere else for Chinese food ever again. Unless you are looking for something authentic.

yep. so that's my weekend. nothing profound - pretty damn fun though.

A new goal...
...of posting more than Tim does. And not just quizzes-n-shit. So I guess that means I actually have to talk about my life, eh?

Life is pretty good. In the past oh year or so since I made a real post I have been working a "real" job* and I get weekends off, holidays vacation and decent pay and health insurance so that's pretty cool. I am not sure that I want to be in the lab for the rest of my career and I think I would like to do something that involves interacting with people more so I am looking into other options. Just the simple act of exploring my options has made a huge difference in my happyness [sic] level but I am not about to do something drastic at this point and time.

As most of you know about nine months ago I met a boy. Well an old man really ;) My friend Mike from work kind if thought that I would like his friend Matt and when I did meet him at a happy hour thing at Shakie's we totally hit it off and have been together ever since. Matt is the mostest wonderfulest boyfriend I have ever had - he makes me laugh and he loves me and he's smart and ambitious and kind and social and sarcastic and a homebody all at the same time. He makes me feel very loved and very secure and I love him with all my heart.

I dragged him to Chicago back in June and he met my parents, etc. We were in the Midwest for 10 days - flew into Chicago and got a car and then drove out to Columbia, Missouri to meet up with Matt's mom, his sister Robin, his niece who's name I can't remember and his nephew Kyle. Stopped in Springfield along the way and drove back to Chicago via the Missisppi River and saw some covered bridges. It was a fun road trip.

After we got back we stayed downtown for two nights - tons of fun! We had a goregous view from the hotel and we ate some really awesome food. There was this friggin awesome chili at a Perry's - it was crazy good - started off sweet and finished with a kick - mmmmm. Then we ate at this place I found online called Blackbird (won a James Beard award a few years back) and that was INCREDIBLE. We wents balls out and had cocktails, 4 appitizers (2 were on the house), entrees, dessert, cognac, coffee and an amazing bottle of wine (Loring Pinot Noir - apparently very hard to find which is why we had to get it). The second night we went to the Rick Bayless (on Iron Chef America) restaurant, Frontera Grill, with my sister and her boyfriend, Archie. Mexican Food in Chicago?!?! It was okay but nothing special. Afterwards we all went to the bar at the top (96th floor!) of the John Hancock Center - the view was gorgeous but the drinks were mediocre. On the way back to our hotel Matt and I went to the Billy Goat Tavern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Goat_Tavern) and hung out with the crazy old bartender again (we did this three times in two days). The next day we went back out to Oak Forest and hung out with my parents for a few days - went to a baseball game, Matt went golfing with my dad and brother, i did some shoppin' with Em and my cousin Kt (who was at the house chilling on her way from Maine to MN - she has a new job at Carleton).

Over the weekend we went up north to attend my childhood friend's wedding - it was much fun and they had a live square dance band at the reception. I realize that sounds rather lame but it was SOOOOO much fun. On the way back down from the wedding we met up with Kt in Oak Park and saw a bunch of the early Frank Llotd Wright houses. Then on Monday we flew back to SD. All in all it was a fantastic vacation - the longest one I have taken in years.

That is all for now - I need to go to work.

*not as exciting as anticipated. oh wells

Now take your cheezburger and never touch the internets again.

There IS help for me!!!

For nearly a dozen years, Kevin Crossman has done everything he can to raise awareness about the "industry of addiction" found in lip balm. Yes, lip balm. Blistex, Carmex, Vaseline Lip Therapy. You name it, he's indexed it on Lip Balm Anonymous. There, he catalogs the Chapstick cravings, posts statements from angry pro-balmers, and shares testimony from those who struggled with breaking free from a daily application of gloss.

As always, we're impressed by a soul who not only keeps a vibrant site running for 12 years, but endures a fair amount of doubters and gigglers along the way. We caught up with Kevin over email to ask him how he does it:

Y: You started Lip Balm Anonymous in 1995. As far as we're concerned, that makes you an Internet pioneer. How have you seen the Web—and people's responses to it—change?

K: The initial response was phenomenal, and people seemed excited about both the topic and the fact that this information was published for all to see. There has been a resurgence of "wow, what a great site" emails in the past few years; perhaps those are the children of the original web users.

Y: We know that you've been slapped with "awards" like top useless site or humor site of the day—and you've bridled at that. We have to admit, though, that we've never been 100% sure that there isn't a joke embedded in LBA someplace. Tell us now, for the record: Is this for real? And do you get this reaction all the time?

K: Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common occurrence. Is the problem of lip balm addiction real? Absolutely! Who would think that being addicted to lip balm is funny? It's a very, very serious problem. Our challenge to folks who say that the problem isn't real is very simple: Go cold turkey. If you're a regular balmer, going cold turkey is like a hard slap across your face and you WILL feel the agony. In the past three or four years, this has been our challenge and so far nobody has said "I went cold turkey and didn't feel a thing." That's why we recommend weaning off of lip balm or for more serious cases our 12 step program.

That said, if someone labels our site as humor or parody, it still helps get the word out about the site. And it helps save lives...

Y: Do you have any advice for someone looking to start a site that agitates for change?

K: I truly believe that the Web enables everyone's right to free speech. Everyone has something to say about big issues or just small ones, so get out there and say it! It can be a way to share your life, or to make a difference with serious social issues that are ignored by the media. What's great is the introduction of new technologies that enable the sharing of information in a more efficient way (not that the LBA site has evolved much technically, mind you).

Y: But it gets its point across. Thanks, Kevin!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Tikka v. Kitten - Round 1
Tikka = not thrilled, as in the growling and hissing kind of not thrilled.
Kitten = generally unfazed - had the balls to eat from Tikka's food dish while Tikka growled. Had the smarts to hide somewhere small when Tikka came after her. And then she came back for more.

Kitten - 2 points for bravery
Tikka - 2 points for good bitch slappin' defending of her territory.

ah this is going to be an adventure. my prediction is toleration from tikka within one week, acceptance and playing within two.

this is Ms. Kitten (aka Vindaloo)

so tikka likes to play with paper grocery bags - she likes to hid in then and then rip then to pieces and spit it all over my house. this morning she is doing the normal crunch rip rip on the bag and then i hear a strange sound and look over and she has a giant piece of bag stuck in her mouth and she is flicking her tongue all over the place and batting at the bag piece with her paw. It takes her a full five minutes to get the piece of bag unstuck from her mouth. brilliant i tell you. absolutely brilliant.
